Dysarthria

What Is Dysarthria?

Dysarthria is a speech disorder caused by weakness in the muscles used for speaking. Speech may sound slurred, slow, quiet or mumbled, making it difficult to understand.

How You Can Help

  • Encourage your loved one to slow down
  • Ask them to repeat if needed
  • Face them when speaking
  • Reduce background noise

Home Exercise Program

Slow Rate

  • Speak slowly
  • Pause between words

Over-Articulation

  • Exaggerate mouth movements
  • Practice sounds: “pa-ta-ka”

Breath Support

  • Take a deep breath before speaking
  • Speak in short phrases

Loudness Practice

  • Practice speaking louder (not shouting)
  • Try phrases like: “Good morning”

Functional Practice

  • Practice saying name and address
  • Record and listen to speech
  • Practice daily conversations

Recovery and improvement take time, and progress often comes through regular practice and teamwork. Patients are encouraged to use these strategies during everyday conversations, while caregivers can provide patience, encouragement, and gentle reminders as needed. If questions or concerns arise, speak with your speech-language pathologist for additional guidance and support.
