Now I Can… Master My Craft.

“I had everything going for me. Then one day, it all changed,” said Curtis Gainwell.

A sudden brain hemorrhage required five emergency surgeries to stop the bleeding and led to a month-long coma.

“I don’t even remember all of it,” he said. “I just remember waking up and realizing I couldn’t really move my right side.”

His recovery journey eventually led him to Methodist Rehabilitation, followed by years of dedicated outpatient therapy at Methodist Rehabilitation’s Flowood location. Initially reliant on a powerchair, then a wheelchair, his perseverance led him to walk again.

“There were days I questioned everything,” he said. “‘Why me? Why now? Why this way?’ But I made a commitment to keep showing up, even on the days I felt weak or unlike myself.”

While he still experiences some limitation in his right hand and continues receiving botox injections at our outpatient hospital clinic, Gainwell has started an inspiring new chapter. He’s now attending barbering school at Traxler’s School of Hair in Jackson, where he has found a supportive community.

“This experience taught me patience,” he said. “I had to learn how to navigate the world and be seen again after such a significant change. But I choose to smile because I know my journey might offer hope and show someone else that survival is possible.”
