Cynthia Fomby
Fighting Through the Fire

Cynthia Fomby had built a comfortable life for herself in Pearl, Miss., never imagining she would wake up one day to find herself engulfed in flames. On October 13, 2024, her world turned into a nightmare.

“It was nobody but God that woke me up,” Cynthia said. “I didn’t hear a single fire alarm. When I opened my eyes and saw the glow, I thought I was dreaming.”

Reality hit fast. She scrambled to her front door, but when she opened it, the force of the heat and smoke knocked her off her feet. She had only seconds to decide to stay and perish or fight her way out. Her instincts took over.

She reached for her keys, always hung in the same spot, grabbed her ID from the dresser, and rushed to the balcony of her third-floor apartment. The air was thick with black smoke. Down below, firefighters shouted, urging her to escape.

As she climbed over the railing, she felt the scorching heat sear her skin.

“I don’t know why my hands didn’t burn,” she said, still in disbelief. “The metal was so hot.” She maneuvered toward a ladder where a firefighter was ascending to rescue her.

“We met chest to chest,” she said. “He grabbed me, but his suit was so hot, I had to push away.” The momentary struggle led to catastrophe. Cynthia fell. She had aimed for the shrubbery below, but instead, she slammed onto the concrete.

The impact shattered her arm. A neighbor rushed to her side, refusing to leave until paramedics arrived. As she was lifted onto a stretcher, she caught one last glimpse of her home with the flames swallowing everything she owned.

Then, darkness.
